Where Are Your Gods Now

Where Are Your Gods Now (2023) intially started as an undergraduate project that aimed to explore three visual album works to then implement findings into a creative project. WAYGN is a visual album set in a post apocalyptic Liverpool that features iconic landmarks, (Welsh Presbyterian Church, Crosby Beach, Sefton Park) and a fusion of jazz and blues style music. The overarching narrative imagines a desolate world with nothing left and leaves the final question: “Where are your gods now?”. It premiered at FACT Liverpool 2nd August 2023 and is now available to watch online on YouTube. The 7 track EP is also available to listen to on Spotify and physical copies can be purchased on Bandcamp.

This is my directorial debut. The experience was a huge learning curve into the world of film, cinematography and looking past the sphere of music videos. Visual albums have heavily shaped how I make music and film; the fantasy, the drama, the homage, the pastiche, the auterism, the pouring of self into these projects. This took around 8 months to make with myself as the storywriter, composer, director, producer and editor while my husband filmed and featured on all of the songs. This is also the first time I have built an event from start to finish: from designing social media assets, creating promotional material, negotiating with venues, understanding film formatting, constructing deadlines, not to mention the creative aspect. If I didn’t push myself, this woudn’t have happened, as there was no production team behind me to get this project in motion.

Bringing this vision of mine to life was a labour of love and determination. WAYGN allowed me to explore a genre of music I never considered creating before and solidified a new love for filmmaking and video editing. It’s ugly in places, it’s gritty, and it is by no means perfect, but it captures a creative moment in my audiovisual journey and will remain a snapshot of where I have started. There are some very obvious visual and musical influences in Where Are Your Gods Now, and this project is the inception of recognising where my potential will lead me.
